Jorge Torrez grew up in Salinas, CA prior to attending Cabrillo College and studying voice and conducting under Cheryl Anderson. Torrez was Anderson’s teaching assistant for the Cabrillo Youth Chorus and also taught choral music at Valencia Elementary School and Rio Del Mar Elementary School. Being the founding president of Cabrillo’s student led ensemble, Il Dolce Suono, he and the ensemble became the first student led group to perform for the 2015 American Choral Directors Association Western Division Conference in Santa Barbara. Apart from conducting, Torrez also spent many years performing in musicals with Cabrillo Stage and the Western Stage!
Torrez continued his vocal studies at the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music and began studying opera and baroque music. In 2019, Torrez was selected as a young artist to perform in the International Baroque Academy in Oberaudorf, Germany and was also selected to participate as choreographer and singer for a South African concert tour with the Cabrillo Choruses. Some of Torrez’s stage credits include Harry Beaton in Lerner & Loewe’s Brigadoon, Hanschen in Sater & Shiek’s Spring Awakening, and Katisha in Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado. Torrez is excited to be back in the Santa Cruz area and as a teacher with Mountain Music School!
